Brain injury survivor John Gaimster, who opened neuro-rehabilitation centre Calvert Reconnections in March 2020, has returned to the Keswick-based centre to celebrate its 4th anniversary.

John completed a range of rehab-focused activities during his latest stay and says the Lake District Calvert Trust has transformed his outlook on life.

“It was a real pleasure to be back at Reconnections,” explained John, as he unveiled a new plaque to mark the centre’s 4th anniversary. “The staff are absolutely exceptional. They’re so highly trained and knowledgeable. With their help, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. It is a special place with a homely and supportive environment.”

Continued John: “I was really struck by the positive, enabling atmosphere within the centre. Everyone pulls in the same direction – staff and participants alike. The activities are hugely beneficial. There’s a real science behind Reconnections’ approach to rehab.”

John’s wife, Ann, was originally from Crosby near Maryport and he loves coming to the centre, because of the staff, the facilities and the feeling of being among the Lake District scenery and close to his wife’s home area.

Said Ann: “I cannot speak highly enough about the Lake District Calvert Trust. Their support over the years has been life-changing for John and our whole family.”

John’s health problems date from 1991 when, aged 29, he underwent 30 hours of brain surgery for an arteriovenous malformation. He made a good recovery and was able to train as a sports remedial therapist. His health took a turn for the worse in 2012, however, when he had an acute intraventricular subarachnoid hemorrhage and a long period of treatment began.

His health problems have left him with a severe visual impairment, difficulties in walking, muscle weakness and balance problems, among others.

“With a positive mindset and the right support, there’s so much I can achieve in the future,” he concluded. “My visit to Reconnections has left me feeling energised both mentally and physically.”

“John is an inspiration and we were thrilled to have him back at Reconnections,” said Registered Manager, Emma Smith.

“At Reconnections we are constantly striving to expand the horizons of what is possible with brain injury rehabilitation.

“People with ABI can sometimes find the set procedures of neuro-rehabilitation too clinical, inflexible and impersonal.

“Our expert clinical therapy team combines cognitive and physical rehabilitation with vocational and outdoor activities delivered within a unique non-clinical environment.

“Our use of outdoor activities differentiates our service from other rehab providers but so too does the depth of expertise within our clinical team.”
