The International Organisation of Aquatic Physiotherapists (IOAPT) celebrated World Aquatic Physiotherapy Day on Friday 22 March 2024.

There is strong clinical evidence that expertly applied aquatic therapy improves recovery times and patient outcomes in ABI rehabilitation.

This is certainly the case at neuro-rehabilitation centre, Calvert Reconnections.

Reconnections’ aquatic therapy programme is led by highly specialised neuro-physiotherapist Femke van Schelven, an Aquatic Therapy Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (ATACP) Foundation trained physiotherapist with neurological specialism.

Femke and Calvert Reconnections’ team of neuro physiotherapists deliver personalised one-to-one programmes to help participants achieve their rehab goals at the centre’s state-of-the-art aquatic therapy facility which includes an underwater, self-propelled treadmill.

“Our aquatic therapy programme complements our clinically-led outdoor activities perfectly,” explained Femke.

“It allows participants to challenge their balance more within the safety of the water, and allows people to push themselves harder without the high impact of the dry land treadmill. It is a great combination and we are delighted to be have this unique form of rehab available.”

Added Femke:

“While underwater treadmills are widely used in sports rehabilitation, there are few neuro-rehabilitation centres with these facilities. Despite extensive clinical research supporting the benefits of aquatic treadmill therapy, it is extremely difficult for individuals with brain injury to access such therapy.”

Claire Appleton, head of service at Calvert Reconnections, said:

“Aquatic therapy further strengthens our world-class rehabilitation programme tailored to support individuals in their recovery from brain injury.”
