A senior case manager has praised Reconnections’ ground-breaking approach to ABI rehabilitation.
“Reconnections has added a new dimension to ABI rehabilitation,” says Tony Finnigan, Senior Case Manager at AMS Case Management. “There’s nowhere quite like it anywhere in the UK. The service has a large rehabilitation toolbox and is striving to expand the horizons of what is possible.”
Tony was an “early adopter” of Reconnections’ unique approach, which combines cognitive and physical rehabilitation with vocational and outdoor activities in a non-clinical environment. “For the right individual, there’s nowhere better,” he says.
Tony’s aim as a case manager is to the maximise an individual’s rehabilitation potential and independence through a fundamental person-centred approach and by treating clients individually.
“This is where the Reconnections model comes into its own,” continues Tony. “The service brings together the beauty and benefits of the great outdoors with person-centred care. The holistic approach to rehabilitation means that sessions are directly to everyday life. Social interaction and bonding also form part of the overall experience.”
Expanding further on Reconnections’ appeal, Tony believes the service is ideally suited to clients who enjoyed an active lifestyle before their brain injury – although Reconnections has also had great success with people who previously had no experience of outdoor activities.
“Reconnections actively seeks to incorporate a wide range of outdoor activities into each participant’s rehabilitation programme to secure the best possible outcome,” he continues. “My clients have responded fantastically well to this approach, achieving greater independence and improving their self-esteem.”
Tony’s feedback complements a breakthrough 12 months for Reconnections with the service releasing its first evidence-based outcomes review.
Analysis of participants’ outcomes indicated:
- 100% improved their ability to carry out everyday activities.
- 100% needed less support when they were discharged and 60% have
progressed onto independent living. - 100% reported an improved hope for the future and an improved sense of purpose and direction in their life.
- 90% achieved their goals.
- 80% felt more empowered through greater participation and control over decisions that affect their lives.
Reconnections has also reported a strong start to 2023, with referrals running at their highest ever level.
